Training Practice

Both surgeries are Training Practices. This means we have qualified Doctors who are training towards careers in General Practice. For full time trainees this means a 6 to 12 month post before moving to another training practice or qualifying as an independent GP.

We appreciate your feedback on how they are doing, what they do well and what could be improved.

We also arrange feedback forms during the trainee placements that allow patients to confidentially provide feedback on how they are consulting, which forms an important part of their training.

Medical Student Training

Both surgeries train medical students from the University of Birmingham. At the time of writing we currently train final year students who come for 5-week placements, learning how to consult with patients and plan their care.

Consultations with final year medical students are usually 30-minute slots, with a review by one of the doctors responsible for training to decide the appropriate treatment. Again we appreciate your feedback on them. We usually have 4 to 6 students per year.

In the future we will also be training students from earlier years in their studies, to introduce them to medical practice and long term care in the community.

  • Medical Students: Your first day at the surgeries will probably be at Tandon Medical Centre, starting at 9am with Dr Hynes. The car park at the surgery is accessible by turning from Kent Street onto Pale Street (by the drive-through McDonalds), following the road round and turning right onto Club Row, where the entrance to the car park can be found.

Final Year GP Placement Roadmap

To give you an idea of the structure of the final year, this section covers the key information covered in the year during Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

By the end of the ST3 year you will need to have completed the mandatory assessments and have:
– ‘Safeguarding Children’ and ‘Safeguarding Adults’ reflections each year, with Level 3 qualification completed within 3 years of CCT date.
– Basic Life Support Certificate (including evidence towards use of AED)
– Unplanned Unscheduled Care: At the time of induction we are awaiting the specifics of how much evidence will demonstrate – Competence in what was previously known as ‘Out of Hours’ care. We understand this will involved a minimum of 72 hours in UUC environments beyond the normal working day, which you will receive back in lieu through your working week.
– NET Survey completed (Survey of your training post)

At the end each year your progress is assessed and feedback given for the year ahead at your Clinical Supervisor Review (Hospital Consultant or GP) and your review with your Educational Supervisor (GP). If there are unsatisfactory outcomes at your Educational Supervisor Review, (confusingly the ‘ESR’), you will be submitted to panel to determine what if anything is required to allow you to progress or leave GP training. This panel is the Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP).

The final panel in the ST3 year determines your progression towards Certificate of Completion of Training, (CCT).

The Royal College recommended time between ARCP and CCT means your ESR needs completing before the panel dates. This means you will need to have accumulated evidence in time for that ESR!
